I’ve had the pleasure of getting to work with the talented Ally of Allyson Wonderland Make-up Artistry, a local Jacksonville NC Makeup Artist. Ally’s talent, combined with her big imagination, has delivered some of the most gorgeous looks I have seen. With the upcoming ball season, I thought it would be great to get some insight into this fall’s hottest looks and things you should consider for you event!

Al: Hi Ally and thank you for joining me today!

Ally: Thanks for having me!!

Al: So let’s dive right in, what qualities should potential clients look for when choosing a Makeup Artist?

Ally: When looking for a makeup artist, I would first look at their portfolio. What’s their style? Does it coordinate with the event you are wanting to have your makeup done for? How long have they been doing it? It’s OK to be picky, just like finding a hair stylist, tattoo artist or photographer, or any other vendor.

Al: Much like photography, it is best to book your Makeup Artist in advance. How long should clients book in anticipation of an event?

Ally: It depends on the event. For weddings, anywhere from 3-6 months out. Summer weddings are extremely popular so make sure to start looking well before hand. For events such as the Marine Corps Ball, at least a month, as appointments book up VERY quickly in this area. Let me say this, it’s never too soon.

Al: That is so true, it is NEVER too soon and reduces the stress of finding a last minute artist! Speaking of events, the Marine Corps Ball is almost here and I want to know this season’s hottest make up trends?

Ally: For Fall 2014, the makeup trends are simple liner and bold wine lips if you want to stay traditional. For more of a unique look, pastels on the eyes are a new look this year. The 90s are making a HUGE comeback with brown and mauve lips, for example Kylie Jenner’s look has gone crazy recently. For the ball, I suggest going with something that coordinates with your dress and brings out your personality while keeping it classy and elegant. The Ball is a very formal event and your look should reflect that.

Al: During events we all need a little touch up, so I was curious what are your top 3 touch up must haves?

Ally: For touch ups I always recommend having blotting papers to keep oil at bay, or Starbucks napkins work great and they’re free!! Make sure to carry a lip gloss or lipstick, and a compact mirror to make application easier. I would possible take eyeshadows, glue if you need it, and a mini bottle of your favorite fragrance to make sure you smell pretty the whole night dancing away!

Al: I whole-heartedly believe in the saying “you get what you pay for”.  People may not realize what makeup artists do behind the scenes and the lengths they go to ensure their client have a great experience. Could you shed a little light on this?

Ally: Most people don’t realize how expensive it is to put a kit together. You are paying for services as well as sanitation and supplies. There are things a make up artist is ALWAYS restocking, false lashes, q-tips, lash glue, makeup remover wipes, disposable non reusable items such as mascara wands that can only be used once per client, per eye and thrown away unless you supply your own mascara. There are other things such as quality of work and perhaps travel fees to cover gas. Just keep in mind your neighbor down the street probably won’t give you that Kardashian glow or use sanitary items like a professional would.

Al: Sanitation is definitely important! Thank you so much for sharing with us and I look forward to our upcoming projects together!

Ally: I’m excited too!! Thanks for having me! Can’t wait to start collaborating!
