What to do if your toddler is misbehaving during your photo session

Photographing children means you have to quick on your toes and understanding. Small children are learning what their emotions are and some times do not know exactly what they want. They often will act scared, shy or have the meltdown of all meltdowns. This is especially the case when they are having their photographs taken.

There is a stranger with this huge object bossing them around and they are NOT having it. I take my time to meet the children and try to explain why I am there, but sometimes that is not enough. It is important to have family photos with every one present and having fun, so I have provided 5 tips to help with your children if they are not cooperative during your photo session.

1. Try your hardest to not scold your children
If your toddler is not cooperating during the session, refrain from scolding your child. My experience with children being scolded during sessions is they are less likely to cooperate. By maintaining a positive attitude, it helps your child remain calm and ease into the session.

2.  Show your toddler you are having a good time
By showing your little one that you are having fun, they are less likely to be scared. It can be intimidating going to place and having a camera shoved in your face. Give them time to acclimate to the situation.

3. Let them sit aside for a few minutes
If your child has graduated to the full blown tantrum, let them sit aside and have a quite moment. This is a great time to get photos of your other children individually or as a couple. If your child absolutely needs your attention, then this would be a chance to take some nice lifestyle photos (after they are comfortable of course).

4. Bring a favorite item
A comfort item like a favorite toy or blanket will do wonders during a session, but make sure you are comfortable with it being in the photos.

5. Let your children be curious and playful
Sometimes all they have to do is get it out of their system. They want to walk and explore their surroundings, especially if it is new! This is the golden opportunity to get lifestyle shots and once they have had a few moments to get familiar with their surroundings, they can be redirected for more posed shots.

I hope these tips help for a successful session! If you have anything to add feel free to comment!
