As an artist, it is important to learn as much about your respective field and then some. To me, as a photographer, it means branching out, and using new equipment and techniques. Although you may not necessarily use these techniques or equipment for every session, I feel it is important to have the knowledge for those unpredictable sessions or simply to challenge yourself creatively. As the saying goes “rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it”.
For me, learning studio lighting is a little bit of both; creating a consistent lighting source during those overcast days and manipulating my light to create new looks. I have always been intimidated by studio lighting and branded myself as a natural light photographer, but what I was really saying is “I’m scared as hell of these lights”. I finally took the dive and purchased the Illuminate course by Milky Way and I was amazed at how easy it was to learn. My light came in and I was anxious to try it out so I did a model call for some expectant mommas. I have to say I love the looks I was able to create with my new light and cannot wait to incorporate it into more sessions.
So what’s a blog post without photos? 🙂 Here are a few maternity images photographed with my new lighting. I hope you all enjoy the looks as much as I do!
